Ed Hopkins GED Postgraduate Fund

On July 21, 2023, Edward Meeks Hopkins, Ed. D., a native of Amherst County, passed away surrounded by family. Dr. Hopkins' family would like to see his legacy and passion for education continue in the years to come.  This scholarship is meant to assist adult GED® recipients in furthering their education upon completion of their GED®.

Dr. Hopkins was a retired educator of Amherst County Public Schools, serving over 40 years in a variety of roles throughout his distinguished career.  Hopkins is remembered as a caring and inspiring person by former students, colleagues, and friends in the community.

Dr. Hopkins graduated from Amherst County High School in 1962, then went on to study at Hampden-Sydney College.  Hopkins graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1966 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.  In the years that followed, Hopkins received two graduate degrees from the University of Virginia.

In addition to his success as an educator, Dr. Hopkins was a loving brother, husband, father, uncle, and godfather.  His love for family was immeasurable, as was his commitment to his faith through his work at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Thrift Store.

The later portion of Hopkins’ career was devoted to educating adults in Amherst County.  He was instrumental in the GED® program, and served as a supervisor of adult education within Amherst County Public Schools.


The Dr. Edward M. Hopkins GED® Postgraduate Fund is intended to support adult GED recipients in Amherst County as they pursue a higher level of education.  Dr. Hopkins was committed to the very best education for all.  These scholarship funds and their recipients, will honor Dr. Hopkins’ legacy in the pursuit of lifelong learning.
